I am a Professor of Practice in the Department of Disability and Psychoeducational Studies at the University of Arizona where I joined the faculty in August 1999. I prepare teachers to work with children with visual impairments (TVIs). In July 2016 I became the Project Director for an Institute of Education Sciences (IES) federal project, AnimalWatch Vi: Building Graphics Literacy. We are expanding the work of our AnimalWatch Vi Suite project (www.awvis.org) through which we developed an iPad app about endangered species. The app helps students build their math word problem solving skills. Our new project will provide students supports in learning how to gather information from graphics (e.g., bar graphs, maps, scatterplots).I am a person with low vision who had struggles as a child learning to read and write.
