The Tampa Lighthouse for the Blind is working closesly with the city of Tampa to help travelers with visual impairments navigate safe street crossings.  This pilot phase will install 'smart paint' to crosswalks surrounding the Tampa Lighthouse.  Travelers will use 'smart canes' which have sensors that interact with the crosswalk paint, helping these travelers maintain a straight line of travel while crossing the street.  This technology is being developed through researchers at the Ohio State University, Mississippi Valley University and Western Michigan University.
