National Homework Hotline for Blind or Visually Impaired Students: Part 2

NHH-BVI is providing FREE homework help for students with visual impairments!

The National Homework Hotline for Blind and Visually Impaired students (NHH-BVI) was created in response to the school closures due to COVID. (See Homework Hotline for Visually Impaired Students post, dated March 16, 2020.) The ‘Hotline’ is available at no cost for K12 and college students in the United States. The responders are experienced TVIs, tutors, mentors, STEM professionals and college students who are eager to assist students with visual impairments. The hotline support includes JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver for MacOS and iOS devices, Nemeth and literary braille, Cranmer Abacus, refreshable braille displays, braille notetakers, core subject, tutoring (math, ELA, science, social studies) and scientific talking calculators. NHH-BVI also facilitates a weekly Braille Reading Buddy program.

The ‘Hotline’ now begins by the student, educator or family member filling out a request form in the format of a Google Form. The request form is used to connect the student with the best responder. Questions include what type of assistance is needed (including if weekly tutoring is requested) along with the student’s primary learning medium. Finally, the form has a checklist of times that the student is available for a call from the NHH-BVI responder, with options Monday – Friday 3pm – 9 pm EDT (12pm – 6pm PDT).

This homework hotline is an incredible resource dedicated to supporting students through school closures and hybrid instruction; it is also a wonderful opportunity for students to receive 1:1 instruction from a knowledgeable responder who fully understands the topic that they are tutoring. Everyone has areas of strengths and weaknesses – including TVIs and family members. Take advantage of the quality experts available through NHH-BVI to learn new technology or educational skills!
