A Special Trap

By Activity Bank on Nov 19, 2013

This activity has been revised and was originally created by Kathy Heydt and Monica Allon and published in the Perkins Activity and Resource Guide (1st edition, 1992).  The second edition is available for purchase.

This activity reinforces the skills of weight shifting and moving from a squat to standing. Lessons include Adapted Physical Education.

Hula Hoop® (or rope, ribbon, flexible band)

  • Ask the student to stand with both feet inside a Hula Hoop®.
  • Tell the student she is in a special trap and cannot jump out of it.
  • Tell the student to bend down and lift the hoop up over her head to get free of the trap.

  • Vary materials: a box with two opposite sides cut out; an inner tube (without the air); a circle of rope, ribbon, yarn or string.
  • Ask the student to perform the same activity, but this time starting off with only one foot in the hoop.

Hints: Protect the student from falling or bumping into obstacles. It might be helpful to perform the activities on a safe surface, such as an exercise mat.
