This tutorial describes the tools and resources that can help teams make appropriate decisions about accessible educational materials (AEM) and reading tools. The tutorial will also cover the implementation and evaluate the effectiveness of AEM and reading tools.

Participants will earn 1.5 Professional Development Points, ACVREP, CTLE, or Continuing Education credits by completing an online quiz.

This is a web-based, self-guided professional development activity for TVIs, VRTs, O&Ms, Parents, Teachers of the Deafblind or Severely Impaired, and Rehabilitation Specialists. ACVREP has approved this course for Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialists for People with Visual Impairments (CATIS).

Upon completion of this tutorial, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and explain the purposes of assessment tools for literacy support.
  • Locate the “Guidelines for the Provision of Accessible Instructional Materials” for their state or district.
  • Name 4 major decision points for determining specialized formats for an individual student.
  • Explain the role of Assistive Technology within the Expanded Core Curriculum.
