Federal Law: Required hours to teach the VI

Posted by Cindy Robinson (not verified)

Hello. I am a contract teacher for the visually impaired. In order to do a better job, I need to know some more information.

Where can I find the standards for the suggested and minimal amounts of time needed for weekly V. I. instruction?

Determining amounts of time needed for VI Instruction

Hi Cindy,

This is not determined by Federal Law, but rather by each IEP team, school, district or state.  There are some good tools to help you determine what is appropriate:

Michigan Severity Rating Scales

Literacy for Students Who are Blind: A Framework for Delivery of Instruction

I hope these will be helpful.

Braille Pen Pals

Posted by Charlotte@Perkins

There are some programs who help to set up braille pen pals for students who are blind or visually impaired.  You may wish to contact:

Braille Slate Pals  https://nfb.org/nopbc-slate-pals
National Organization of Parents of Blind Children

There is no cost, but you may need to wait several weeks for a response.  You will need to fill out an application form with basic information about the child's age and interests.
