Who Am I?

This activity has been revised and was originally created by Charlotte Cushman and published in the Perkins Activity and Resource Guide (1st edition, 1992).  The second edition is available for purchase.

This activity works to both improve auditory discrimination and to help students to identify familiar people by voice. Lessons include Social Skills and Independent Living Skills.

Materials

Digital recorder

Procedure

Make recordings of familiar people in the student’s life – her teacher, parents, friends, clinicians, other staff. Have each person give a short description of herself: “I work in the office. I use the computer and answer the phone. You see me when you get the mail. Who am I?” When the recordings are completed, have the student identify each voice.

Variations

  • Add more voices as the student becomes familiar with those voices already on the recorder.
  • Change and expand the descriptions to include physical attributes or other clues.

Hints: Help the student to identify the people she encounters throughout the course of the day. Talk about who people are and what they do. Encourage the student to anticipate who she will see during her day.
