Motivating Through Music

Practice listening and gross motor skills with this adapted movement song!

This activity has been revised and was originally created by Judith E. Bevans and published in the Perkins Activity and Resource Guide (1st edition, Volume 2, 1992).  The second edition is available for purchase.

Hap Palmer’s song “Colors” has been adapted here by Judy Bevans as the song “People”. Using music as a motivator, this activity works to improve gross motor skills while teaching students to follow directions. Lessons include English Language Arts, Social Skills, and Recreation and Leisure.

Piano, autoharp, or guitar are recommended. If not available, shake or tap a tambourine.

Students sit on chairs. The teacher sings the song, which provides directions for movement.

Students often wait for their names to stand, but sit when anyone else’s name is called. Staff should reinforce good listening and waiting.
